How to extract data in a text field?

The most basic field for data extraction is the text field. In these fields, you can input the extracted data precisely as reported in the document or provide your description.

If there are multiple concepts for each data extraction field (i.e. study arms), you can click the 'plus' button to add a new, empty cell.

To extract the required information directly into a text field, you have to:

  1.   Locate the specific data in the document and highlight it.

  2.   Click the 'Plus' button (when empty data extraction fields exist)  to add the highlighted data to the corresponding data extraction field. In this way the relation between data in PDF and value in data extraction form will be established.

  3.  When there are no empty fields in data extraction form, click the 'Plus' button located below the data extraction fields. The tool will create additional field and the extracted value will be automatically added to the data extraction form. Please note that this option is available only for sections with a single data extraction field.

Alternatively you can copy or type the extracted information into the corresponding field.  However this action won’t  connect text in the paper with extracted data and will impede the QA phase.

If you want to extract similar groups of values repeatedly, you do not need to extract them manually each time - instead, you can use the ‘Duplicate entry’ button.

For example, if you need to extract the same outcome several times, with the same definition and unit, and the only variable is a different time point (see screenshot), you simply extract the common values and then duplicate the entry depending on how many time points you have.
